This feature provides a level convenience and security that many people love. Simply walk towards your XE using the Jaguar key fob held in your hand and it will know that you're within reach. When the key fob is in close proximity to your vehicle, you can open it by grabbing a door handle or pressing the button to release the luggage compartment.

Transponder Chip Keys

Jaguar introduced a brand-new key design in 1998. This key required special equipment to program. The keys have a transponder chip in them, which disarms the vehicle's standard immobiliser system. They must be integrated into the Jaguar's database of keys, which is typically done by a dealer or locksmith. Contrary, not all locksmiths or dealers are trained to handle this kind of key. Tibbe Keys

Some Jaguars from the 1990s used keys that were called a Tibbe key. They require specialized equipment as they feature flat cuts with precise angles on four sides. They are not interchangeable with regular keys, and many locksmiths don't have the specialized equipment needed to cut them. This can cause long wait times for people in need of replacement keys. Dealerships are also able to cut them but charge a substantial amount.

The lock itself is fairly interesting, since it is made up of 6 or 8 rotary discs that have to be properly aligned in order so that the sidebar can fall into position and allow access to the trunk or door lock. This is done using a special-looking pick/decoder tool that looks kind of like a drill bit and the process can be challenging. It is important to remember that this tool is only to be put into the DOOR lock, never the trunk lock or ignition -- doing so could cause it to bind and break.

There are a handful of locksmiths who specialize in Tibbe keys and their costs depend on a variety of variables like time effort, cost, consumables, equipment and so on. The adapter kit needed to work with these keys can cost hundreds of dollars. Each key must be programmed by hand for each new key.

Key Fob Battery Replacement

It's important to have a spare battery available. The easiest way to know that it's time to replace is when the key fob no longer activates or responds consistently to the buttons. Your Message Center may also alert you that your battery level is low.

It's easy to change the battery on your Jaguar key fob in your garage. It takes only about a couple of minutes. The first step is to open the fob's door open with a flat head screwdriver or your fingernail. You can tear the two seams that connect the halves of the key fob to reveal the blade.

Once the fob is open then you can slide the blade of the key backwards to remove the cover and reveal the old battery. The battery will look like an old coin with the plus and minus signs on one side. Be careful when inserting a brand new battery of the same kind and make sure it's oriented correctly.

Make sure you only touch the battery from the sides. Doing so from the top and bottom could cause moisture to transfer and reduce the battery's life. Reassemble the fob, and test the buttons on the remote to determine whether they function again. If you require assistance you can contact your local Jaguar Annapolis service professionals.
